Hi, I am a bassist and I am in the process of designing my own future instrument. I need help working out the shape of my fingerboard's surface. For optimum playability. the action (the distance between the strings and the fingerboard) must be as low as possible. However, the fingerboard's surface cannot be flat; it must be curved along its length. This is to ensure that the string only comes into contact with the fingerboard at one point, rather than the vibrating length of the string also contacting the fingerboard and creating buzzing/muting/incorrect tuning. Each string requires a different curvature due to different tensions and gauges. I need somebody to experiment with strings in order to find out exactly in what space each of my strings will vibrate in and then translate this data into a curve for each string so that my fingerboard can be manufactured. This must all be done very precisely and accurately. This project has potential for future application and could be very successful beyond my future instrument. Formulae relating to this area of instrument making have long been overlooked, resulting in lower standards of instruments. I demand perfection and I'm sure that others in the future will too. I hope there is someone who will take this on as I am searching desperately. Thank you very much for reading about my project, Oli Griffiths.

Hi, As I understand, your problem is to calculate the maximum amplitude of each string and then design the curve of fingerboard such that strings remain as close to board as possible but don't touch it during vibration. I found this problem very interesting; because I am a physicist and working on vibration of solids in longitudinal mode and this is vibration in transverse mode. This project is very much related to my experience and area of interest. I offer my services to solve your problem. Apparently this calculation of string amplitude is a simple job and is not more that few hours work. But practically it would take long time. Because vibration depends upon, many parameters, like string tension, thickness, material and so on. I we would have to determine them first. I explain this by following example. Vibration amplitude depends upon the force by which the string is plucked, and practically it is very hard to determine this force. To overcome such problem during design of any thing people usually have to suppose some values or their ranges. So we may also have to do some suppositions and approximations. I offer you to please consider my bid, we would have an excellent working relation during this "research and development" project. Looking forward your positive response. Nasir Javed
