Teach me *Proper* Site Design (DIVS/I.E6.0/7.0/Firefox/Safari/CSS)

I am working on a site right now as a learning experience for myself. I will supply a PSD with the template of my site (that I hand designed). The job is NOT for you to make the site, but to teach ME how to properly cut it out and make it work in all the common internet browsers. The page MUST work on I.E 6.0, Firefox 1.5+, Safari, and I.E 7.0. I already am very skilled in PHP/MySQL/HTML/JQuery/Ajax. What I am not good at is 'Browser' hacking to make a site work in all the different browsers. I really need someone with expertise to teach me a proper way to think about making a site and the things to watch out for. My Coder profile is below...
