An event saw the destruction of the plants on the planet and now, years after the Switch, human life only exists in Pods. As in many societies today there are the haves and the have nots (Auxiliary class and Premiums) A poor Auxiliary class cannot afford the oxygen tax which supplies extra air for running, dancing and sports. The rich Premiums, by contrast, are healthy and strong. Anyone who opposes the regime is labelled a terrorist and ejected from the Pod to die. The story focuses on a 16-year-old called Alina who is part of the resistance and when a mission goes wrong she is forced to escape the Pod. The story continues to its conclusion in the sequel. In which Alina and her two friends have to fight to stay alive and look to find a way to save the Planet for the future.

WHY THIS (THESE) BOOKS Teaching ESS and as a mother of boys who grew up watching the Disney/Pixar Films (although I HATE Happy Feet) I have watched lots of films and read lots of books both fiction and non-fiction that could be considered to be Eco-Fiction. I chose these books because they address the issue that most people seem to overlook, regardless of plastic pollution, temperature rise and loss of freshwater one of the fundamental ingredients for life is Oxygen and without it we will all die. Too many people seem to forget that without plants and photosynthesis there would be insufficient Oxygen in the atmosphere for us to survive. I think these books are a timely reminder of what we are doing by deforesting the planet and watching the Amazon and Australia burn. It is not just biodiversity that we are losing, it something even more fundamental than that, the ability to live.
