help (network programming with perl)

I just purchases Network Programming with Perl (the book) and from the example on Page 6 I can't get it to work. I tried altering the small perl code but I CANNOT get it to connect to ANY server. System environment: Windows XP home running SP1. The Windows firewall is disabled. We are on a network usind a D-Link DI-524 router. We called their tech team to see how to disable the router firewall and told us to put our PC in DMZ mode (which we did). The error from the code is always: Socket open failed: A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable network. We are trying to get ahold of [login to view URL]:smtp and we can't even ping [login to view URL]'s domain. We can ping other domains but the script still doesn't connect to other domains, just the ping works. The script was uploaded to a linux web host and works perfectly but I cannot get it to work on my PC via commandline. Your job is to figure out how to change the code (with easy code) so I can use this script and continue learning Network Programming in Perl on this windows machine OR find out what settings on my machine I need to change to get it to work. Project is completed once the script is working.
