I have 8 years worth of experience running Linux. I've manged an ec2 instance in my work as a developer and I'm familiar with ssh. I also have a personal VPS which I only access via ssh, and I understand how ssh keys work. My guess as to what the problem might be is that your ec2 instance may have blocked access to port 22 or is accepting connection on a different port.
