It was on a dusty street in Kabul that I saw, for the first time in my life, a group of women walking ahead of their menfolk. It was a strange sight, the three men in their grey and beige khet partugs, trailing about twenty yards behind the six women in their bright blue chadarees. Traditionally, of course, it ought to have been the other way round - the men ahead, the women in tow.
"A sign of the changing times," I thought to myself.
My sister must have noticed me staring.
"It's the bombs," she said. "They're fearful of exploding landmines."
