BEING HUMAN
What is it about us humans that sets us apart from all the other animals? Maybe, it is the differences between our civilized societies and the wild jungle that sets us truly apart. See, in the jungle, there is just one law. The survival of the fittest. It is an extremely perilous place. Parents can devour their offspring’s, fights to death over mates and territory disputes? To sum it in one word, we can call it barbaric. There was a time in past, when we humans conducted ourselves like that too. But we changed. Why did we change? Because we humans have an unwavering capacity for humanity and goodness within us. We have a very strong conscience, we value life, want to respect and be respected. Humanity is our life’s greatest strength.
The best of humanity is often seen during the times of tragedy. When tragedies and calamities strike, shaking societies as a whole we come together in ways that we never thought was possible. Take the 2004 Tsunami that struck parts of Asia as an example. The Tsunami had devastating effects, killed millions of people, hundreds and thousands of people were lost and countless people lost their homes. The whole world rallied and mourned with the victims and survivors. From all over the world, people scrambled to help in whatever they can. People who were only able to afford to give cents, gave up their precious cents at fund raising. Some people donated supplies and food. We are talking about people selflessly helping people they will probably never meet in their lives. Name-less and faceless individuals; but nevertheless individuals who needed help. We put aside all our prejudices. Race, color and religious beliefs did not matter in that instant
