I had a webserver (Win 2012) which somehow got ransomware. But the problem is that noone has worked on the server or downloaded anything latly. The hacked server has been deleted and the service has been restored on a new Windows 2016-server. But I am afraid this can happen again. I therefore need someone with knowledge of how to secure the server to help me prevent it from being hacked again. To be clear - you are to prevent hacking - not do hacking. It is possible for me to set up a 100% test-server with test-data. What I had done was secure the server against RDP-hacking using DUO Security, but clearly this was not suffisant. After googleing I see that there are exploiting-tools for sale to do operations like this. I also see that tools can exploit the ASP-site which runs there. Well - if there are weekneses in the code I need to know where so we can fix it. The code is ASP.NET. You need to come up with a plan on what to do and then work through that plan.

Hello, As a Sysadmin I Deal with situation like this everyday, first of all my plan will be to filter the RDP connections by IP, creating a whitelist and denying all others IP address. Update the server. Change RDP Users Password Frequently, setting a temporary password policy at the server. Use security software, I recommend to use Trend Micro or Sophos, The best defence is a good offence. Block ransomware from entering your computer vía email or an URL with a good security software. Keep security software always updated. Install a Network monitor, I recommend to use Microsoft Network Monitor, with this tool we can analyze if a ip is trying to access to our server. A good backup policy , apply the 3-2-1 rule, which stipulates that we need to keep at least three copies of its files. Store the copies on at least two different types of storage media.
