Hi , All I have a flat file with data attached for which I need assistance as I would loading the data in this huge file approx 4G with pipe delimited fields in row data a to a database table called Tolson the schema is given in attachment . Please note .dat file is very large and cannot be opened by for example using NotePad to be edited. So needed to populate into a database using bulk insert so it can be read from a table.. I have mapped the data to columns in a table Tolson for SQL server 2008 using varchar2,bigInt for addresses ,names etc .Can anyone assist on how to do this can be done as the data for a name would not be coming in as varchar ‘Tom Jerry’ rather as |Tom Jerry| so the database won’t read it as a name column as its all pipe delimited . I would thing the bulk copy should have a way to format [login to view URL] on a format in normal and XML. Please find attached file and table schema .

Hi, I'm a developer with more than 30 years of experience, at least 25 of them working with MS SQL Server. For the past 20 years I worked (full-time, in-situ) for two international organizations designing, implementing and troubleshooting databases, mostly in MS-SQL Server; IATTC, in San Diego, CA, USA, and the FAO of the United Nations, in Victoria Seychelles. I'm currently retired, but do some freelancing to stay busy and up-to-date with the technologies. I can do this for you and provide you with the necessary setup for you to do it, although given the size of the .dat file you are trying to import, I think bulk inserts would be more trouble than useful (any inconsistency in the data will abort the whole process). If you insist in bulk update, I would recommend a small application to break down the data file into portions that are more manageable. My offer is for the two hours it may take me to come out with a workable solution for you (although I'll stay engaged until you have successfully solved the problem) If you think you may be interested in my services, please send me a message, so we can discuss some of the details. Best regards, Marco Garcia

I'd do it the simple way - I would build a simple C# program that reads the file and writes it to the database. I have all the tools I need to start right away.
