This Short Argument Essay should be created for civic, social, or common everyday situations. (In other words, this is not a highly researched, lengthy academic argument.) The Short Argument Essay is a space for you to apply what we've learned about rhetorical situations, rhetorical proofs, argument types and structures, and fallacies. You have two options to choose from. Either you can write an evaluative argument using the Classical Oration model, or you can write a proposal argument using the Rogerian model. You can choose any topic as long as you have a human rights exigency. Your essay will be between 400 and 600 words. There is no specific research requirement, so the extent of your research will depend on how much you already know about your topic. Because this is a short argument, though, you should try to use no more than 3 sources. In the "Developing Short Arguments" video lesson, I teach topic development/research and essay organization for each of these. Format and document your essay using MLA or APA. You will not be penalized for minor citation errors; however, major citations errors, such as missing citations or lifting exact phrases from source material, are tantamount to plagiarism and will result in a failing grade.
