In this project you are asked to design a gravity retaining wall to retain a 4 m height vertical
excavation. The ground profile and soil properties are given below:
(a) Check the stability of this wall against the limit state criteria, according to AS 5100.3. All
soil properties for this site are determined by carrying out appropriate laboratory tests.
Note: If your wall dimensions do not satisfy the limit state criteria in this step, please do
not repeat step (a) but complete all calculations for the limit state criteria.
(b) The deformations of the wall and retained soil should be minimized under the
serviceability criteria. The limiting displacement for serviceability criteria are, 25 mm
settlement and 10 mm horizontal displacement. Therefore you need to carry out a finite
element analysis using RS2 software, similar to your practical 1, and provide results in
the form of contour plots of vertical displacements (settlements) and horizontal
displacements (lateral deformations). For concrete use properties from the Practical 1
RS2 problem.
For the RS2 analysis, provide a table for material properties and describe the analysis
stages using figures (Two stages). Include the finite element mesh used for the analysis.
A contour plot of ‘total displacements’ should be included in your report showing the
deformed shape of the wall. If the deformations or rotations are high, explain remedial
measures to reduce them.
(c) Plot the lateral pressure distribution behind the wall obtained from the RS2 and the
distribution assumed based on the Rankine method (obtained from hand calculations).
Discuss the reasons, if they are not the same.
(d) Write a concise report including the information requested above in steps (a) to (c) ,
providing a sketch of the wall geometry, dimensions and drainage details of the retaining
wall.
(f) Include your references, at the end of the report. Also include the RS2 software generated
output in an Appendix.
