Developing 3D Environments Introduction You will be provided with a .cmo file that includes a number of resources. The assignment focuses upon the creation of a 3D interactive environment using these given elements. The aim is to be able to follow the Virtools avatar ‘Pierre’ using a series of third person viewpoints through a series of ‘obstacles’; this should be done demonstrating/ using a range of the camera handling techniques learnt in your lab/studio sessions. You will also create a fly through to direct users at the start and you should also use a picture-in picture view to assist users in the maze section. To achieve higher grades I will need to see an understanding of these techniques demonstrated by the creation of new routines that utilise new combinations of the elements that we’ve learnt. Supplied with a series of objects that have paths which the avatar should be able to follow, suitable collision detection routines need to be set up on these objects so that Pierre cannot pass through them. One of these objects will have a ‘button’; you should script events to make appropriate use of animations so that you can interact with and use the lift. Similarly another has a vertical slab that will require the avatar to push it over to form a bridge. ## Deliverables Deliverable You need to submit a single Virtools 4.1 Composition Files (.cmo) along with a notebook documenting the development of your ideas. All scripts and VSL must be open and readable, if any code or script is locked it will not be awarded any marks. No additional files should be submitted. Students may use a 360 controller if desired although if this choice is made an alternative keyboard controller makes good sense. deliverables Out of 100 Up to 50 Marks Camera handling…. To pass an appropriate variety and number of cameras are used to handle different conditions, there must also be a clear attempt to avoid occlusion. The ability to avoid occlusion by objects within the scene should be clearly demonstrated to gain higher marks. Marking will then consider the speed, smoothness and usability of each camera routine and the transitions between one camera mode and another, for instance has the use of picture in picture mode been set up in such a way that users are aided through its inclusion? Does it appropriately switch on and off depending on the avatar’s movement? Shifts in path direction should clearly be accommodated. Do the camera routines take into account specific actions such as the use of buttons? Up to 30 Marks Character control…. Basic avatar control, the effective implementation of collision detection routines and the use of ‘gravity’ will be considered within this mark. All three should be implemented to some degree to pass. Marking will then examine the extent and functionality of these elements throughout the scene. Up to 10 Marks VSL Composition… This will handle the animation of the ‘interactive’ elements within the game. To pass it needs to allow users to utilise an action button that utilises an appropriate animation in different situations. Further marks will be given for work that takes account of changes in the environment ??" for instance would you execute a push animation once an object has fallen down? . ## Platform xp or vista
