display xml filtered by date

i am looking to display xml data that has not expired when compared to the server/system date. for example: i have 5 upcoming party events. when the date of each party event passes i do not want the the past event to show on my webpage. only future events should be shown. for this project assume 5 party dates with date, title, description attributes (some future some past), you provide the html, xml, and xsl documents. if i am looking at this the wrong way, and you think there is an easier way, let me know..
