Email templates are fickle. They have to render correctly not only on all mail platforms (hotmail, gmail, ymail, outlook, apple mail) but they need to look good on mobile too. Are you using a specific ESP to send these out? This can determine how the templates are built whether using inline styles or a separate stylesheet. I've got 7 years experience building email templates, I can knock this out in 24 hours.
