I have a requirement for a working circuit to be designed and a prototype built. It will be a battery cell cycling circuit, which will be able to charge a 1.2v cell (Either NiCad or NiMH) at a set rate (6 amps). The charging circuit would be best to employ an existing battery charger IC, with peak delta detection. This is the smaller part of the project. The second stage is the discharge circuit. This needs to be able to discharge the cell at an accurate rate of 30 amps (although, it would be nice if this was configurable, from say 1 to 50 amps). The purpose of this project is to build some blocks towards a cell calibration device. The discharge circuit will need to be configurable as to a cut-off point, however this isn't critical as I will be able to control this remotely. I intend to build a computer interface for these two circuits, which will be able to control which function to operate and monitor the status of the cells etc. You can build this as two seperate circuits, although it would be preferable build it as a single circuit with a dual-pole relay to choose between charge and discharge functions. It would be preferable if this design could be modular. I would intend to build this up to support the parallel function of handling maybe 8 (or more) cells at the same time (but individually, not as a cell-pack). I am capable of doing microcontroller interfacing, but not analogue/discrete electronics. Please send me a message if you have any questions.
