Case Study Development

Create a case study for a project management fundamentals course. This case study will provide practical application opportunities for the students. tt will be based the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK(R)) Guide, 5th Edition. The case study should be realistic and should be something that has broad appeal and relevance to a diversity of student backgrounds. Examples of types of scenarios might include but not be limited to the following: (minor construction project, technology refresh, process improvement, organization restructure), The case study will have several components. Most components will have some background or scenario information, a case study assignment, a template to use in completing the assignment and a proposed solution. The case study will be done in MS Word 2007 format and will have the following components: Initial background information: This will include information about a fictional organization and project, and provides initial scenario information upon which subsequent exercises will be based. Develop project initiation exercise: This will provide essential background information for developing the project charter. High-level product description, summary budget, milestone schedule, assumptions and constraints, initial risks, project manager assigned and additional information will be provided to enable participants to complete the project charter. A project charter template will be created for participants to use. Collect requirements exercise: This will provide details of meetings, workshops, interviews and other interactions that elicit and describe requirements, both project and product requirements. Scope Statement exercise: This will provide a scope statement template, along with information clarifying the project boundaries and detailing work required to get the project completed. Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Exercise: This will provide an opportunity for participants to break down the work. The information from the scope statement should provide sufficient detail to break the information down into a WBS. Provide a graphic solution for the WBS. Schedule Exercise: This will provide an opportunity for participants to build a schedule. This should include the activities, an opportunity to sequence the activities, durations for the work, and should include an opportunity to calculate a critical path. Provide a graphic solution for the schedule in a network diagram. Budget Exercise: This will provide resource and related costs of the resources for getting the work done. Provide financial information that allows participants to create a bottom-up estimated budget in a time-phased fashion. Risk Exercise: This will provide an opportunity identify possible risks to the project. Scenario information should include some simulated interaction with stakeholders who express some possible risk. Provide a risk register template and outline an exercise for them to complete the register with possible risks. Project performance exercise: Provide a scenario the project is in execution and project performance information has been taken. Provide exercise that allows participants to compute, interpret and report on the status of the project. Project closing exercise: Provide information and outline some procedures that specify steps that need to be taken in order to close the project. Have them identify what needs to be done, as well as identify lessons learned from the project.
