Lack of women architects in the industry is one of the most pressing issues facing architecture today. It is undeniable that the Architecture industry is top-heavy with males. Many studies over the years have investigated the gender imbalance in architecture. Although most of the architecture schools have a huge lot of women pursuing architecture but if we talk about professional field, the results are alarming. Clearly, women represent a smaller percentage in architecture firms when compared to men. There is an enormous drop off rate as they enter the professional sphere. Equality in the architectural industry is notoriously poor. Just 10% of people employed by the construction industry are women; amazingly the figures for registered, working architects are similarly disproportional at just 12%. This actually seems shocking to me because at architecture school there is equality in numbers -- so why is this ratio so low? Both architecture and development lag behind law, medicine, and accounting in the percentage of women represented in each profession, according to research by Catalyst, a non-profit that promotes women in business. The mere reason for this and the people who should be blamed are nobody else but our own male chauvinist society.
