Heavily influenced by American road trip bands, enter de Shamonix, rhythm & blues band with some strong punk leanings. I appreciate them as a kind of revved-up Rolling Stones, with some of that Johnny Rotten nervy impudence thrown in. Sans the abuse, that is.
The venue is Belushi’s, unpretentious rocker pub in Covent Garden. The mood inside is relaxed, with an edge of anticipation. The rumblings of the band getting themselves up there draw a couple of casual glances from the crowd. Until the music actually starts though, they remain engrossed in conversation, or solitary musing near the bar. The walls are littered with some gems of rock music icons: album covers and the likes. This graffiti ‘au courant’ creates a backdrop of artistic influence, making the presence of its subjects veritable here and now.
Hailing predominantly from North London and cemented together by longstanding friendships, this ‘band of brothers’ has gigged extensively throughout London and beyond over the past 20 months. Tel, the front man and lead vocalist, was the last member to be added to the group. He met Gavin, who had been scouting for a drummer and a guitarist, in a pub one night. Being his usual cocky self, Tel offered his services, as a vocalist though, since he couldn’t play drums or guitar. In Gav’s own words, it was Tel’s hairstyle at the time that got him the part. They’ve been together ever since.
