Rss feed images

I am creating a newssite with the CMS joomla, which features an image-section at the bottom of the front page. This project is about that image-section.

**The image-section will consist of many rss feeds organized together.** The text will be removed so that just the images remain.? For layout and picture size, see “A?? in the picture attached to this project.

The images should be collected by simplepie, see simplepie.org.

Not all the feeds are «picture feeds». Some are e.g. in xml, html or from feedburner. There are many formats and I want many of them to work. **Some will be easy, others hard,** and a few impossible (those we'll ignore).

## Deliverables

1.? ? ? ? ? Code:

**The output code must be extremely lightweight and cpu-efficient.** This is extremely important. It must be organized in the same way as e.g. [url removed, login to view] with classes. The use of tables should be kept at a minimum.

It should work on a standard web server. Also, the code should have none or extremely few errors in [url removed, login to view]

There must also be some kind of **backend** or control panel with password so that I can change feed urls, feed-formats and the number of pictures for each individual feed.

2.? ? ? ? ? Features

The collected images must be **resized** so that quality is better than just taking a big picture and resizing in the browser. They must also be cropped a little in order to fit into the squares. The new smaller pictures must be optimalised, so they are as small as possible. The solution must **cache** the content generated and collected. The cache must not grow and become too big, but kept on a reasonable level with periodic deletion.

The pictures will be placed at the bottom of a joomla-site version 1.5, so it must be 100% compatible with this system. **This is critical for the project's success.** There must be no crossover-functionality or problems. The solution should not in any way disturb or influence the joomla-site. See [url removed, login to view] for more information.

**A small control panel** at the bottom of the images is necessary. It feature some buttons. One of them should switch the feed images from «open links in new window» or “open in same window??.

When mouse-over on the pictures, a preview window should pop up with the title of the item-post, and some story text if available. See e.g. [[url removed, login to view]][1] for example. A bottom in the control panel should let the users turn this feature on or off.

The pictures **should be updated every** two-three hours. The update-time should be part of the backend, so that I can increase or decrease it. (It can be a part of cron jobs in cpanel, if that is easier...). If the update is too heavy for the webserver, it must be conducted step-by-step, and not all at once…

A **“default?? picture** must be loaded instead of the default “missing image?? if for some reason the images from a feed aren’t accessible for the server. See “C?? in the picture attached to this project.

At the very bottom of the pictures, there should be a **«popular today»**, “popular this week?? and «popular this month» solution. See “B?? in the picture attached to this project. This means that clicks on the pictures must be registered in a database... or else this solution is not possible. The backend should also allow me to turn on or off the popular sections, and/or changing the timespan.

The backend must also feature some statistics, with clicks on pictures/feeds etc.

The layout of this popular-section should be quite similar as the popurls.com-example. See the attached pictures.

3.? ? ? ? ? Feeds

The feed list includes e.g.:

<[url removed, login to view]>

<[url removed, login to view]>

<[url removed, login to view]>

<[url removed, login to view]>

…and many others. I'll give you the whole list with about 15 feed-sources when bid is accepted. Any advertismens must be filtered out...

4.? ? ? ? ? Other issues

**The site is in Norwegian,** so some small time will be required at the end to translate the English into Norwegian. I will provide the translation.

**I’m reasonable:** If some parts of this project are extremely hard or impossible to solve, I'll settle for a non-perfect solution. But please inform me of this in advance if possible. E.g. if there are some kinds of rss feeds formats that you can’t deal with…

There must be no coding-language (e.g. UTF-8) or similar problems. The viewers of the webpage will be Norwegian and they should not experience any “#%#&%%??!4??-letters etc.

I am not at this point sure if the solution for integration will be a “wrapper?? or a “custom code?? plugin for joomla. Guess both will work…

This project must feature **formal documentation/manual on how I can clone this project.** This must include all the database-stuff, cronjobs, and back-end-management. And any other important elements that are needed… The detail level must be “average?? and focus on the practical steps.

Further, some time should be calculated into fixing a few details that I may have forgotten in this project description.

5.? ? ? ? ? Maintainace:

I need the solution to be **maintained for at least 6 months** after the project is over. So, if I experience any problems with this solution during this first 6 months, you must help me fix it.
