high traffic server/mysql optimization advice

We need optimization recommendations for high traffic sites on a single server, which receives roughly 600,000 connections a day. We also need inputs on the behavior of MySQL, and on known bugs and fixes for high volume transactions. This will require thorough understanding of the database server.

## Deliverables

1) recommendations for best values of max connections and other pertinent variables in apache and mysql 2) investigations in the behavior of MySQL (e.g. it does not seem to release RAM after getting flooded with concurrent connections, and will eventually use up all available memory on the server, after a week or so) and recommendations (use MaxDB vs more optimizations)
