Small customisation of wordpress theme

I would like to customise a few things on my Wordpress website. Firstly I would like to put an container that overlays the featured parallax image on my homepage. The theme I'm using allows me to display the page heading on top of the featured image, however I would like to use multiple fonts and text colours, and I would also like to put a call-to-action button with the text.
Because this is not supported in my theme and I can't simply use custom CSS to modify it, I think I need to use either a plugin or a child theme to add this functionality.
There will also be some other small jobs come up as I get stuck.

Have a look at [login to view URL] for a similar example of what I want done. They have text and a button on top of the featured image (this website also uses the same theme as mine, which is '15Zine' from themeforest), however they also have a slider as their featured image.
I don't want to change the appearance or functionality of the page, apart from obviously putting a RESPONSIVE overlay container with some text and a button in the centre of the featured image. I still want the parallax function of the image to work.
