Customize a LIVE Zen Cart Website

Hello Freelancers,
I have an on-line webshop using ZEN CART. It is customized and some standard features of ZEN CART are not incorporated. I would like to start with activating the Attributes feature with certain products. Of course it will need to be functioning properly on the back and front end and printing on the Invoices. I have already tried to set up the Attributes feature myself, but it will not display on the front end. I believe it is not incorporated in the coding of the template.
If you think you have some skills needed to figure this out on a LIVE website, please let me know. If you have suggestions how to operate on this LIVE site with minimal damage and down time, please also let me hear your suggestions.
This site has been needing some upgrades to keep it current, so I am hoping to make some more changes to the site if this goes well. Always a bit nervous to modify a live site, so I am looking for someone who has experience in Zen Cart and Programming.
