Contest Brief

Please read the following instructions carefully. The initial designs submitted haven't followed the directions completely! Reread every details thoroughly before you begin!

We are a school library in a small rural school district in Wisconsin. We are starting a new reading program for 4-year old Kindergarten this upcoming school year (school officially starts in September). This reading program will be entitled, "50 School Library Books Before Kindergarten: Read with Me." The idea behind this program is that students enrolled in the 4-year old Kindergarten program will have the opportunity to check out a given number of school library books during the school calendar year and either read them with an adult here at school or a parent or guardian at home and record their progress. Parents and guardians of these students will need to record the title of the book and the author of each book read on a reading log sheet.

You will be creating a logo and two reading log sheets for this project to be considered complete. The logo should incorporate the following elements: the phrases "Montello Schools Library" and "50 School Library Books Before Kindergarten: Read with Me." The logo should market and sell the idea of young children reading books with adults, that reading is fun, and that reading is the key to success in school. The logo should be powerful and resonate with young children, the adults who will be reading to them, and the teaching staff who will be assisting in marketing this reading program as well.

The second part of this project is creating two reading log sheets. The first reading log sheet sheet will feature the logo you've designed and will allow students and adults to record the first 25 books they have read together: title of book, author, and a unique smiley face that participants will fill in if they've reread the book with an adult. Somewhere on this sheet you will market the following phrase:

Read with your Child: Read it again!

Young children like to hear and engage in their favorite stories over and over! Repetition is a vital key to learning. So reread your child’s favorite story with them again and encourage them to pick up on details! (Please note that the 'Read with you Child: Read it again! ' statement as this 'young children like to hear..' statement needs to be be incorporated on the first reading log sheet. )

You will be using the template for the first reading log sheet to create a second reading log for books 26-50. Somewhere on this sheet you will market the following statement:

Read with your child: Have them tell the story!

Have your child tell you the story! Have your child look at the pictures in the story and predict what’s going to happen next. Visual clues are an important part of learning! (Please note that the 'Read with you Child: Have them tell the story" statement as this 'have your child tell the story...' statement needs to be be incorporated on the second reading log sheet.)

Both the logo and the two reading logs should be fun. This reading program is unique because the books participants will be recording must be checked out from the school library, not the public library. The local public library has their own program entitled, "1000 Books Before Kindergarten." Our school library encourages you to research '1000 Books Before Kindergarten' programs from public libraries and reading log templates to use as inspiration for this new '50 School Library Books Before Kindergarten' program.
