Contest Brief

Hi all!

Introduction:
We're working on an indie game called Ranchers of Kyvos and we're looking for an environmental artist to join our ranks to round out our core dev team (currently 6 people). This artist will help create concept art for the buildings and trees/grass/shrubs/etc. They will later help in providing textures/materials for the 3D modeller.

If you are chosen, we will likely be contracting you consistantly for more assets in the future, so make sure you're available for an on-going working relationship if needed. Previous game development experience isn't a must, but would be preferred! We're more interested in the art style than the experience at this point.

What is Ranchers of Kyvos?
Ranchers of Kyvos is a unique ranching simulator RPG (3D isometric) blending rich storylines with a mellow gameplay. Check out our Facebook page here to learn more: https://www.facebook.com/ranchersofkyvos

The Project:
In order to understand the art style of the applicants for this project, I will ask that you submit your concept art of an isometric view of a blacksmith's shop, a general store and a farm house/store. This concept art should include the ground and trees surrounding the building (or other buildings and cobblestone paths if you want to place it in the middle of a small town).

The Artstyle:
Ranchers of Kyvos art direction is trying to achieve a cute, relaxed and natural vibe (in tune with nature). This means you should try to achieve a very memorable building sillhouette using minimal resources (see game lore section for more details). Doesn't have to be "realistic" but it should not look "impossible" (aka. no floating elements). The buildings won't be a 1 to 1 ratio and will be bigger on the inside than they seem when implemented in the game. Attached is a VERY ROUGH concept art of the ranch for the main character from one of our existing artists as well as a splash screen image of the main character. Following this style would be nice but NOT NECESSARY. I want to see YOUR preferred art style. If it so happens to match, even better.

Here is a reference of in-game buildings that I gave our concept artist and am giving to you as well for this project: https://www.pinterest.ca/kennyrogertaer/rok-building-inspiration/

Game Lore
If you win this project, you will gain access to a whole slew of information/lore that will help in future projects related to Ranchers of Kyvos, but since a lot of it would be spoiler heavy, I'll keep this section relatively brief and relevant to this specific project.

The game takes place on the sunny archipelago of Kyvos, populated by quirky creatures of the same name. These animals provide for the most important resources in this small country, oddly stranded from civilization. The kyvos provide the fur for cloth, milk for food, horns for ivory and dyes from their fur to color their clothing/buildings. Since they are stuck on islands, resources are scarce, especially metals, and the most abundant buliding materials are glass (from the sand), wood, stone, cloth, clay and the like. The people living on this specific part of the island lead a very simple life, taking care of the kyvos and living off the land, so they're very in tune with nature.

The main town is a little more developed, with cobblestone pathways, taller buildings. For a sense of scale, the town will have anywhere from 15-30 interactable characters, but there will be many that pass through the town looking to simply purchase products from a kyvo ranching town.

It's also worth noting that this culture has it's roots from the Greeks, so some greek architectural inspiration is a valid route as well.

If anyone needs to know anything else to have a better idea on this project, feel free to leave a message on the project so everyone can be updated!

I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!

Unfortunately, we won't be able to extend it, but you're welcome to submit a simple sketch for the concepts if you'd like as that's mostly what we're interested in!

Ha ha, yes it's for real and it's made in Unity. We already have a coder and a technical artist but thanks for the offer!

Is this for real? I have the domain Kyvos and I make games myself. If you need a coder drop me a message.

Hello! I have a question about the contest, do you need a concept art of those buildings as in sketch format (line art+colour) like in the attached picture in the description?

That's correct! It can be the same fidelity/quality as the attached image or higher. I'm looking more for the concept than a hi-def image. Obviously, the more complete the image, the better, so I can fully grasp your art style!
