Flyer and Infographic for Chess Competition

Contest Brief

We run the UK Chess Challenge - a childrens chess tournament that is the largest in the world. We are preparing for the 2019 season and are pulling together our marketing materials and school kits which will be posted to 1,200 schools and 40,000 children.

We want to produce a flyer promoting the event and encouraging schools to enter. The flyer will be double sided folded A4 – so essentially a 4 page A5 document (portrait).

The flyer should incorporate an infographic that visually describes our competition to newcomers at a glance. The infographic should be on the inside pages of the flyer (pages 2 and 3) spanning 2 pages of A5 – so essentially an A4 infographic (to be viewed portrait or landscape – designers discretion).

Rough concept of flyer:
Page 1 – attract attention and call to action
Pages 2 and 3 – infographic describing tournament
Page 4 – how to enter and what happens next (what do they get)

Ideas for infographic:

Key themes to draw out
• UK wide competition (4 countries – England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland)
• Chess competition for kids 4-18
• Tournament structure – 4 phases, progressively harder

Possibly a main theme of climbing steps/mountain/ladder/pyramid. Including the 4 country flags (or a map) and a chess theme might work well.

Examples of progression theme below. These are just to demonstrate the above theme rather than express a preference for these exact designs.

Files include:
• Information and statistics about the event
• 4 page PPT covering some main points – and a very rough sketch of a flyer
• Various images connected to the competition (please find better chess related images where appropriate)
Images of United Kingdom flags (5 flags - United Kingdom, England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland)
Images of United Kingdom coat of arms

Update 24/09/18:

There needs to be a clear call to action on the front and back cover (enter now online or by email)

Use pictures where possible to tell the story - for example no need to state "there are 4 stages" if that is obvious from the illustration

Needs some chess content as this is a chess competition.

This is the worlds largest chess competition - so let's get that point across

Designs should try and include most of the information on page 3 of the powerpoint - particularly "key dates". The more of this information which can be included the better - as long as the design doesn't look too cluttered.

Great to see the designs coming in. This has made a few things clearer in my mind so I've updated the description to incorporate the following points:

There needs to be a clear call to action on the front and back cover (enter now online or by email)

Use pictures where possible to tell the story - for example no need to state "there are 4 stages" if that is obvious from the illustration

Needs some chess content as this is a chess competition.

This is the worlds largest chess competition - so let's get that point across

Some designs are including the information on page 3 of the powerpoint. The more of this information which can be included the better - as long as the design doesn't look too cluttered.

I've added a couple of extra files - "UK coat of arms" and "united kingdom". This gives some more symbols which may be useful in the design. A note on the flags: there are five flags of the united kingdom - the union jack (red white and blue) and the 4 flags of the individual countries England, wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I would prefer you use all 5 but with the emphasis on the Union Jack

the infographic is the key part - the most visually attractive and the one which really demonstrates the nature of the tournament will win.

I'd like to confirm a few key points: the middle 2 inside pages need to visually represent the nature of the tournament. Please read the "information and stats" word document. message me if something does not make sense. the front page should be to attract attention. the back page should be more 'functional' (what next).
