Contest Brief
I want to convert my garage and shed into modern living spaces. I would like to receive a detailed floor plan to work out what goes where and a 3D EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR design render (with façade, furniture, lighting, floor coverings, wallpaper, design objects, etc.) for the proposal. Extra points for good lighting elements.
Requirements:
1. For the garage (the smaller of the two buildings): make a small, modern studio. Respect the dimensions of the existing space. The exterior needs to remain the same, minor visual changes are acceptable without any structural changes.
- Queen bed or a sofa bed/pullout bed
- Small bathroom with standing shower, sink, and toilet.
- Small kitchenette (just two hot plates, sink, small fridge).
2. For the shed (the larger of the two buildings): here I am more open to suggestions for use of the space. Respect the overall dimensions of the existing space but other than that you are free to put windows/walls/doors as you choose. The current building will be fully demolished so we are starting from scratch. Maximum building height is 3.5 meters. The building is in the garden. The idea is to use this space in the winter/summer for entertaining.
- Interior and exterior design expected for the shed (see shed inspiration photos)
- Kitchen area (fridge, stove, sink)
- A cozy sitting area to relax and entertain guests
- Anything else you think would make the space usable/unique
3. Connect the two spaces with an ENCLOSED passage way. Looking for something creative like a greenhouse or a glass walkway. Open to other ideas.
4. Include a washer/dryer laundry in one of the two spaces
5. Foresee where to put radiators on walls in both buildings (central heating system in place)
6. Outside barbeque/pizza oven area (covered and connected to the shed building). This would be in addition to the dimensions already provided and should come at the very end (first garage, then shed, and last BBQ area).

Your request for a small kitchen for the garage has limited us and affected the overall design. it's a smart idea not to do it at all.
congratulations on the winning design. Thank you for such a contest.- 2 years ago

Dear owner of the contest, could you describe a little the weather situation in your area. If it rains a lot, it snows ...
It is to ensure, if it is really feasible to build with a flat roof or with a low slope- 3 years ago

Hi Hun,
I live in Belgium. Snow is rare but it does rain a lot during the fall and winter.- 3 years ago

I've updated the description as a few of the entries have been placing the BBQ area in the passage between the garage and shed. Please do not take away space from the existing outer walls of the shed to accommodate the BBQ area. This should come as an extra to the existing complex. The ideal space for this would be at the end of the shed (so layout-wise it goes first garage, then passageway, then shed, and lastly the BBQ area. There is plenty of space in the garden left to add on the BBQ area at the end. Also please make sure the passageway is fully enclosed with either a roof or in glass.

Hi, for the outside barbeque, is it like the seating space should also be covered and connected or only the pizza/ oven space? can the seating space be open?
-
Contest Holder - 3 years ago
Whatever works better for your design, both options are fine. Just a note, do not take the outside BBQ area out of the shed dimensions. This will be added on to the shed in the back as there is still plenty of space in the garden. It makes most sense to have the BBQ area at the end of the shed (so first garage, then shed, then BBQ) rather than in between the two buildings.

hi, can I remove or replace the small divider walls (1m and 0.9m) in a garage?

Contest Holder - 3 years ago
No, that wall unfortunately needs to stay.

And this double door, can we make it smaller to have more space inside studio ? and maybe it possible to add an other window ?
-
Contest Holder - 3 years ago
The windows and the double doors need to remain the same. Only adding the door to connect to the other building and closing the small door that's marked on the plan.

hello,
For the garage (the smaller of the two buildings), can we add door in the side of the second building for easy Connect the two spaces with a passage way
thank you- 3 years ago
-
Contest Holder - 3 years ago
Yes. The idea was to have a door in the wall that faces the shed that would connect the passage between the two buildings. The existing door to the side would be closed off.
