What you ask for is a very classical problem... but always developers come and go and people maintain someone else's code. The only proper answer to that is documentation, documentation, documentation. On the basic level this is comments in the code and on a better level there is a separate document that explains key concepts of the written code. If the developer is lousy then it is not use anyway, but I trust you "P." is a skilled person. this is how I would approach this.
