No time frame was set for this project, so I am going on the principle I bring from the world of offline public relations, that a campaign (including planning) that does not run at least six months is unlikely to yield favorable results.
My expertise is in strategic SEO, but in your highly competitive sector (possibly the most competitive of all), I suspect you will need much more. I plan a dual approach.
First the SEO. Your site registers at Google, but nowhere near enough to have a great impact on revenue. You have tremendous opportunities on the content/keyword side and probably on the navigation side, as well.
I have two clients who are also moving in very competitive circles. While some things I have done for them are common, most are as unique to them as their market is unique. Cookie cutter tactic don't work in competitive fields.
For one, I made a single, small navigational change that made a big difference in the rankings, then I also did some non-reciprocal linking. We created a new companion site, used two news releases, and also did some traditional SEO. In 2 ½ months the site has moved from a single listing at #8 - #10 on Google for its top competitive search term to holding down two spots at #4 and #5 (the only dual listing in its category!). #1 is probably out of our reach in the near term, but I plan to be at #2 in another month or so.
For the other client, whose website is quite unprofessionally designed and structured, I did a fair amount of traditional SEO work on a few pages, a major navigation overhaul and some non-reciprocal linking. I am also testing a semi-dynamic aspect that seems to be working ("semi" because I am doing it manually until I am certain of the value of setting up a script). His site has moved, also in about 2 ½ months, from #23 on Google for its top competitive search term to #8.
Most of what I will do SEO-wise will also aim to attract customers directly. I focus on non-reciprocal links because typical "link exchanges" yield mostly links with little search engine capital and even less chance of attracting customers directly.
Your customers are gold, and there are some great ways to partner with them to spread the word. I also have an idea for dynamic content (yes, the spiders can read it easily) that, if implemented, would blow most of your competition away in a few months' time.
Although the web hosting field is very crowded and very competitive, it is not very creative. Like the SEO field, it is full of soccer players who can kick the ball, some very well. Bring in a marketer who can outthink the other players while kicking the ball, and start scoring goals.
My goal is to so absolutely impress you with success that we can build a long term partnership. I hate "prospecting" for clients, so I will do what is necessary to make sure you want to maintain that relationship, too.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to working with you.
