It seems you need a restful api to get the image with changeable width / height / quality and some other parameters. Can you tell me about fill and filter properties ? what are other parameter values for those ? Bid might need to be changed if there's custom filter needed. About the efficiency: I would suggest you to use mongodb in grid to store images. In a non technical way, you should store it in a db where it can store as binary data and deliver it on request. if its stored in multiple directories, it becomes slower when millions of image stored in harddisk and queried often. but mongodb or any database can serve it faster as id can be indexed. I choose mongodb specially because of its faster working, its scalable to multiple server very easily with sharding mechanism. Drawbacks is, you have to use a vps to install mongodb. though there's free service out there to test. But as you are going to use node.js I guess you will use a vps at least to work with. Also which version of node.js you are using. If you haven't chosen anything yet, I would highly suggest you to 0.10.36 version or any version which match / doesn't conflict with node-imagemagick-native or any other node packages you are going to work with further. and of course a 64-bit version. cause in 32-bit version of mongodb there's a limitation of 2 GB max.
