Details: A network diagram is used in computer telecommunications to draw a graphical chart in schematic form of a network. This type of diagram is particularly useful for network engineers and designers in compiling detailed network documentation, it is also very useful as an HETM professional to have a detailed mapped out network. Generally, a network diagram consists of a network that is made up of interconnected groups or systems. The scope of a simple network diagram can be either a single application, a family of applications or even an entire enterprise. There are also other complicated network diagrams broadly designed to cover SOHO networks, wireless networks, networking wirings, LAN networks, network topology, and network cabling. Your assignment is to create a network diagram of a patient monitoring network (details are listed at the end of this document). This network will show the components that make up this network, their medium, and how they interact on the network. The purpose of this project is to familiarize yourself with not only networking components, the layout of physical networks, the topology, but also to represent tasks, and dependencies. Here are your guidelines: You are you create a network diagram using Microsoft Visio (or other software of your choosing that is capable). Microsoft Visio is not a download; it is a secure connection (Citrix) to IU’s server to access the application. Here is how to access it: Resources: Here are some helpful links to aid you with using the Visio product: • [login to view URL] • [login to view URL] • [login to view URL] Scope: You have a patient monitoring network consisting of 20 hard wired patient monitors, 10 wireless patient monitors, two printers, two central stations, an HL7 gateway, two 24 port switches, a U-rack in the IDF, a Patch panel in your rack, 3 UPS’s (one protecting your U-rack the others protecting your central stations) and 4 WAPs and a WAP controller. One of your UPS’s, one printer, and one central station will be for your hard wired patient monitors. Another UPS, printer, WAPs, and central station will be for your wireless patient monitors. You will need to devise an address and hostname scheme. For this, you have 2 subnets one for the hard wired devices and one for the wireless devices. Both IP address schemes need to be in the private IP address range. You must also assign your patient monitors, central station, and HL7 gateway with a hostname (hostnames are often associated with a location identifier such as a pt room or bed number). For the sake of this project, we will say this design is for patient rooms 610-640. Your switches must have mac addresses as well along with an IP address for remote administration. You must add wireless specifications for your 10 monitors and access points. You must have an SSID identified as well as what wireless channels and frequencies you will use for these 10 monitors and access points. Access points must have an IP address as well for administration. Include the following: • A legend or Key • All connections (mediums) • All logical and physical address for each device (if it if communicates or has NIC, it has a MAC and IP) – You must include the netmask either in CIDR or octet form • Hostnames of each devices (your central stations, server, and PT monitors will have hostnames – a good plan is to assign a hostname that is the same as a room/bed number) • A Rack with the appropriate dimensions and equipment (patch panel, HL7 server, switches, UP’s, etc) Equipment needed: • 4 access points • A WAP Controller (just make this a server and label it in your U-rack) • 2 central stations • 2 printers • 3 UPS’s • HL7 gateway • 20/10 patient monitors • Switches • Patch Panel
