I'm a middle-aged closeted writer looking to get my first project off the shelf! I am SO ready. Don't hate me for the slow start! I work full time, teach college business writing so spend large clots of time reading less-than-inspiring prose, and have myriad beloveds and causes. But 2018 is my year. I really mean this. If you can't help me, I'll find someone who can, so no pressure and no worries!
I'm looking for an artist to illustrate a children's book I've written. It's a simple modern tale in which a boy manages to tackle a dreaded task with a little help from magic. He also discovers a bit about authenticity--and about kindness to oneself, not just others--along the way. I'm hoping it's funny, too, in an understated, whimsical way.
I was blissfully transported by books as a girl: Madeline L'Engle, anything with an unlikely girl heroine, and the color-bound fairy tale books: Red, Green, Blue, Violet, etc. Once I had my son, my favorite children's books to read him were by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake, and William Steig, illustrated by the author. And let us not forget another Quentin Blake favorite, How Tom Beat Captain Najork and his Hired Sportsmen. My highest ambition is to write a book that some child, somewhere, will absolutely die for and keep checking out of the library and read over and over, or talk their parent into buying. Right up there with that dream is another: to write a book (hopefully the same book) that parents will love to read aloud.
Are you familiar with those illustrators? Do you love them? Do you like to draw slightly wicked characters or sly kids who enjoy getting away with something? I may need you!
