My approach to work on your site will be : 1) Understand the business scenario, features and functionality of your website well and make sure I find out the critical path. The critical path is the most used logical flow in a system that is of primary essence. For example, in a food ordering site, I must ensure the basic ordering process is working correctly. If a customer is not able to place an order on the site, he will probably never come back. So its essential that we make sure that the basics are okay and working. 2) My second priority would be to ensure I have proper monitoring in place. A lot of problems can creep in when we are not watching the site but the customer/users are trying to use the site. We need to ensure we get proper notifications when the site is low in resources or the site is not available for some reason. 3) Proper logging in the codebase. From my 15 years of experience I have found that if we do not properly log requests sent by the users it becomes very difficult to debug the issues. When a site is in production, many times it happens that we are not able to replicate the issue as we dont know what exact flow or path the user has followed. It would not be good and it is also not ensured that the customer will tell you what he has done to make the issue happen again. So, we must have logging in place which would ensure that we can track on what the user has followed. I hope my suggestions above has made sense . Pls ping me for free consultation.
