Select an Algorithm (of your interest) used in a real-world application (ex. Sciences – Biology, Physics, Chemistry, etc., Engineering – Civil, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics, etc., Internet/Web, Education, Meteorology, Astronomy/Astrophysics, Healthcare, Transportation, Air Travel, Manufacturing, Genomics, Utilities, Product Design, Architecture, Defense, Communications, Art, Tourism and Hospitality, Law Enforcement, Media and Journalism, Sports, Automotive, Banking and Finance, Stock Trading, Retail, e–Commerce, etc.). There are plenty of these. 2. Gather material related to the Algorithm topic from various sources (Web, Books, Journal articles, Conference papers, Magazine articles, Newspaper reports, etc.). 3. Filter the material and retain the ones directly related to your topic. 4. Read all the relevant material. For each resource/article/paper, make notes of the salient points. Summarize the contents. 5. Make notes of your analysis and commentaries on your chosen topic. 6. Write your term paper describing the algorithm adequately and clearly, and how it is used in the real–world applications. Revise the paper several times (the number depends, but generally 5 or more). Also, have someone read and give feedback [login to view URL] slides to talk about it for ~8 minutes. Suggested Structure of Term Paper The general structure of the paper is as follows: 1. Introduction 2. Background/context 3. The main topic – the Algorithm used in a real–world application (evolution time line, with appropriate description and analysis, as applicable) 4. Summary and Conclusions Suggested length of the paper is ~8-10 pages (single spaced, single column, Times Roman 11 pt) The starting point would generally be material from the Web/books/news articles. Please use them generously to get started, making sure to cite the ones you have used. For the specifics of the algorithms refer to technical reports/journals/proceedings, which may be found in the Library. As for good writing style, make use of NU’s Writing Center, as required. Suggested Guidelines for the presentation 1. Time per presentation is 8-9 minutes. Make sure to have a balanced coverage. 2. Prepare slides (suggested: 10–12) to portray the real-world problem the algorithm is solving, clear and detailed description of the algorithm and its analysis. 3. Suggested flow: a. Introduction to the topic b. Background / Context / History (the exact problem being addressed) – charts, trends, statistics, etc., if any / as applicable. c. The technical details of the algorithm (very important) and analysis.
