Add German and French translation for just 5 words in a basic theme.

I will create a very basic theme that has a 5 English UK words, but I need those words to show in German or French if that is the language Wordpress is used in.
The idea is that I will be able to follow what you've done to the theme (as a learning exercise for me) so that I can replicate the process on another (larger scale) theme that I am creating.
I understand this will involve pot or mo files and possibly the use of PoEdit, but honestly all of the tutorials I've read aren't very good at explaining how it's done, or imply some sort of prior knowledge on the subject that I don't have.
Anyway, for this project I don't expect the 5 words to be a perfect translation as I said this is purely for me to see how it's done, and I will probably have a couple of follow-up questions afterwards.

The bits I need to have coded for translation are the 2 headings and 2 sentences on the homepage, and the single sentence in its admin settings page.
