Phase I of the project is as follows:
I need a sample Browser Helper Object with a self-extracting setup program that will download, install, and create the required registry settings etc, create a visible icon for itself in the IE toolbars. This is our first experience with BHOs so we are looking for a well documented illustrative sample.
The BHO project itself is ultimately intended to be a program that will periodically open a connection to a remote server, and download XML data.
For this sample Phase I BHO, this connection will be HTTP and URL location for the xml data can be harcoded. The data received from the URL will be an XML file and should be displayed in a pop up browser window with no toolbars. A sound should be played. If a previous window is open, the same window should be used. The site should be polled for new data every x seconds.
Preference is for the BHO to be written in C#, although this is not strict. The BHO and setup programs should work in as many platforms as possible. It should honor any proxy settings the browser has configured.
Please provide your experience with other BHO programs, setup programs and DOM manipulation.
(Phase II will include a more complex remote server communication mechanism for XML data retrieval, but a DLL for that will be provided. The XML data will be used to manipulate the DOM of certain web pages)
