In one of the asp pages on my web site, I need to check if an email address already exists in a database without refreshing the page. I believe Ajax can do this for me.

Currently the process is that the user enter an email address as part of filling out a form ([url removed, login to view]). Then he submits that page, which calls another page (add_submit_user). At this stage the app crashes if there is the same email address in the database. I know I can address this then, but I would rather catch this at the input stage.

1) what I need is a simple asp page example that asks for First Name, Last Name, email address, Description - in that order. And a submit button to the next page to (anything).

2) on the email address field in the first page, when the user enters their email address, do the Ajax check back to the database.

3) if the email address exists, popup a messages saying

"This email address already exists, please try again"

and place the cursor back in the email field.

4) if the user skips over and tries to submit the page it must not be allowed to submit if the email address is already in the DB

The aim is for me then to transfer this code to my live site.

thanks
