Every summer many MSIT students enroll in one of several sections of CIS 5690, Advanced System
Project. Multiple faculty members are each assigned one or more section of CIS 5690. It is the
responsibility of the faculty member to manage the students enrolled in the section and enter the final
grade. Since students are assigned to a section without knowledge of their project or the technology
they plan to use, students may actually desire to work with a different faculty member whose are a
strengths better match. If the other faculty member agrees, he or she will oversee the project, assign
a final grade and communicate that grade to the responsible faculty member. Thus, a faculty
member is responsible for entering the grade for all students enrolled in the assigned section,
overseeing students in the section who are not working with another faculty member and, if
approved, overseeing students who are assigned to another faculty member’s section. All
communication is currently conducted through email. The large number of students enrolled in CIS
5690 exacerbates the coordination and communication challenges inherit in this approach. The new
system should address this.
By default, the faculty assigned to the section becomes the overseer for those students’ projects. If a
student wants to work with another faculty member, the student must contact the faculty member and
make the request. Currently, there is no formal mechanism whereby the assigned faculty member is
notified of another faculty member’s agreement to provide oversight.
