Create Media server on VPS (CentOS 6) using WebDav or NFS

Need to set up a media server on a VPS. The server will host video files (1.5GB + each / HD quality) and stream them to clients. After reviewing the various protocols which can be used to connect client / server, it appears that the using either a WebDav mount or an NFS Mount would be the best way to go (though I am open to ideas. Client software supports many protocols, including uPnP, RSS, http, etc...) I prefer not to use SSL to secure the shared directory due to the performance loss. The server will be IP restricted, so simply using a user / password should be fine. I will provide full access to VPS (cPanel & Root). The project is pretty simple & straightforward and for someone who knows Linux / CentOS, shouldn't take more than 1 hour to complete.

If i understand you good, you need to stream videos online, maybe with vlc? (I can do that) so you will got a links in http without authentication. and you will use a firewall to limit only to the users you need? Also can be done, or can be user .htaccess script for users, which also can be done. The mount thing is possible but i'm not sure that's a good idea? I'm not sure, so if you think that what i'm talking about is a good idea, its ok.

Hi, 1) how many sumultaneous connections you expect? 2) do you need sever-side transcoding? What is VPS company? Some precompiled Linux images have no NFS module compiled-in kernel.... that may be an issue. Please let me know as many details as possible. Best, Alex

Hello there, I can create you a Wowza streaming server for you, so you can stream proffesionally to your clients: i can get you a free 6months developer licence. after that time you must buy a licence. If not, we can go to an open source solution using pure NFS streaming. Or also we can create streams from VLC. This can also be configured. All those three above solutions can be implemented, the cheapest one can be VLC. Let me know. Sebastian

The lightest you can go is the kernel NFS. I'm pretty sure this is included in CentOS. I've done it multiple times on Gentoo with great(very little) resource consumption. Was also streaming HD videos to xbmc over 150mbps wifi with almost no lag. NFS would definately work the best if it's included in your VPS kernel.

Please provide more information about the VPS specs, so I can check if your demand is realistic. Also provide me with the storage results. The offering will consist of and installation of a media server and an initialization and a quick overview to add users and create groups in the environment. this offer will only be valid if the specs of the server supports the usage of a media server.

This is a quality non spam bid! I can get your media server setup. I see it's urgent and I can do this fast. I am available 24 hours a day and I can talk on messenger, skype or anyway you require. I have a few ideas for how to implement what you need but a simple NFS shared with restricted IP list is ideal. I can setup everything for you quickly, an hour or less. I will provide ongoing support for this project included in the same price.

I wouldn't use NFS, Samba/cifs is a better choice if you have Windows users for example (works great mounting from linux too though). I suspect you're setting up a media center? :)
