Fontlab is looking for one or more designers to create photofonts to use to promote our font software. Photofonts are an open standard font format for bitmap fonts. Please see [login to view URL] for a complete explanation and specifications.
We would like to get about 100 new fonts. We will provide the successful proposal(s) with a copy of our BitFonter ([login to view URL]) font editor which they will use to create the fonts.
Each font must contain the following character set (75 characters): ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz1234567890!#$%&*-?/:;,.
Each font must be created with a height of 120 pixels and contain 120 kerning pairs.
## Deliverables
Photofonts can be made in (at least) three ways: cookie cutter method, digital photo method, and hand lettering. You can see examples of all three on the [login to view URL] website and in example files which we will send you.
Cookie cutter photofonts (like Goldheader) are the easiest to create. You just take a regular bitmap font and apply colors, textures, transparency and/or distortion to the glyphs. There's a neat tool called Font Twister ([login to view URL]) that can do a lot of this automatically.
You create digital photo photofonts by arranging objects in the shape of letters and photographing them and then using the photos to create the glyphs in the font (using Bitfonter). Most of the photofonts on the photofont website are digital photo photofonts as is our Chocolate Cream font.
Hand lettering photofonts are the most difficult. As the name implies these fonts are created by hand-drawing each glyph. The Trees font is an example.
We are looking for proposals to create any or all of the following photofonts:
Cookie cutter type-
straight American flag
wavy American flag
British flag
German flag
horizontal rainbow
pebbles
running water
translucent white
grass
mud
moss
beach
ocean
sunset/sunrise on ocean
forest
silver
marble
granite
concrete
steel
leopard spots
tiger stripes
zebra stripes
Digital Photo fonts-
beads
buttons
leaves
feathers
letters drawn in dirt
bottles
colored trees in a forest
Hand lettered fonts-
flowers
neon
ornamental initial caps (26 letters only)
icicles
We are also open to any other ideas which you may have for photofonts.
We plan to pay per font. So in your proposal please specify which of the above designs (or ideas of your own) you want to take on and what your charge would be for each one. Then give us a total.
As an added bonus we intend to enter all the fonts created into ATypI's 2012 type design competition, in which there will be a section for bitmap fonts.
Obviously a background in graphic design is necessary for this job and experience in type design will be very helpful.
Timeframe for delivery: This depends entirely on the number and kind of fonts in your proposal. But we would like to have the whole project wrapped up in 3 months.
