There is a type of pump called a coil or spiral pump. Searching this term on youtube will give you many videos. There is also information on wikipedia here [url removed, login to view], and more can be found by searching google.
I can also include a link to my dropbox with my research for interested freelancers.
Questions to be answered:
Is there a theoretical limit to the amount of water head pressure that can be generated by such a pump? Please explain.
How does the diameter of the coils affects the amount of pressure generated?
How many coils are required to generate a pressure head of 100 metres? What is the minimum diameter of the coils required to be?
How many coils are required to generate a pressure head of 200 metres? What is the minimum diameter of the coils required to be?
Please respond to the brief with your qualification to answer these questions. There may be further work for the winning freelancer to develop a mathematical model that predicts the behaviour of a pump when given the relevant variables.
