1K = $75 I was there sitting by the bar, trying to be unobtrusive, tapping my foot to the beats of the music, my fingers going numb against the single bottle of icy cold beer held gingerly by my fingertips. I looked around myself at the dazzling flurry of shapes and lights. There was the occasional Humbert preying on his freshly legal Lolita; the group of new adults still in the fuck-all-that-moves phase; the lonesome twink who probably lied to his parents about spending the night at a friends to get there; and then the perennially lonesome figure standing in the shadows drinking slowly off his beer to make it go the night, hoping someone would notice him, talk to him. He was feigning disinterest, thumbing through his phone occasionally as if to appear busy, but I could see that he was waiting around for someone to come and take a chance on him, didn’t matter whether he was interested or not, just so he could feel desired, like he mattered. He didn’t… not here anyway. I pitied him. But then sensation rushed back to my unfeeling hands and I remembered the bottle of beer held in my own hands, I hadn’t yet taken a single sip, and I realized that I was just like him. Pitiful. I took a token sip off the top of the bottle, and then went back to observing the lone figure in the corner, my spiritual doppelganger. I thought of approaching him, sure, why not right?
