The slide presentation will be 20 slides maximum in length. Select a pharmacologic class of drugs typically utilized in a particular body system (Example: Loop Diuretics and the Renal System) and the presentation can use a variety of presentation techniques, including (but not limited to) PowerPoint presentations, Internet inclusions (YouTube, Hulu, etc.), photos, news clips, etc. Includes notes underneath each slide. The expectation is to provide new information to an audience of registered nurses.
The lecture must include the following:
Overview for pharmacologic drug class and therapeutic classification (Example: Pharmacologic class: Loop Diuretics; Therapeutic drug class: diuretics and antihypertensive.)
Break down the drug class that you will be discussing—for example, if you are focusing on drugs that act on the renal system, and the overall pharmacologic drug class is Diuretics, know that there are 5 separate classes of diuretics (see page 838 in Karch as an example); Choose ONE of the drug classes to discuss (example: “Pharmacologic Drug Class: Loop Diuretics” or “Pharmacologic Drug Class Diuretic Agent: Thiazide Diuretics” (See Page 835).
Pathophysiology of diseases and therapeutic goals of treatment strategy for your OVERALL drug class (Example—Diuretic Agents work on Kidneys and Urinary tract, typically used for hypertension, CHF, etc.).
Cultural considerations and potential herbal/alternative therapy interactions for the class of drugs being reviewed.
Two recent peer reviewed articles; one research and one “best practice” for your specific drug class in your presentation and bibliography
A Patient Educational Handout regarding the class of drugs (Example Drug Class: Diuretic Agent; Thiazide Diuretic; HCTZ). You must include actions, potential side effects, drug/food/herbal interactions and ameliorating factors, routes of administration, dosing regimen and follow up indications.
