Contest Brief

We would like to design a logo for a new product with the following generic detail :-

Product :- Borax Powder.

Physical appearance :- It resembles the look and feel and free flowing nature of table salt. It is a colourless odourless substance.


Uses :- We want to package it as a household cleaner. It is used as an additive to detergents while washing clothes, as an additive to floor mopping and utensil washing for better shine and disinfection. It can be used as an anti termite agent. It is also used as a basic fertilizer for plants along with urea and NPK. In our packaging we want emphasis on it being a laundry detergent booster for the time being. In the Western countries this product is used as clothes softener as well. (we do not want to mention the anti termite bit because that will involve insecticide licensing)


Packaging size:- We would like to design a packet for 1 kg of this product. According to the density of the product a ½ Kg Haldiram packet should be sufficient to hold 1 Kg of Borax.

Plan :- For the time being we would like to sell it via online channels and see how the market responds to the product. It is not an established product in India and a cultural shift is needed for adoption. Something like a Vanish (product), not everyone uses it or is convinced by it or really needs it.


Strategy :- Borax Powder is an age old substance available to the world from centuries. It is non glamorous and non magical. So packaging it well is what will sell, with an attractive logo. The market in India is still very very nascent and none of the major brands are playing the Borax game right now. We propose to sell online so the packaging should stand out in the competition and should be bold so that thumbnails in the listing sites like an Amazon and Flipkart and other social media channels make it clear and catchy. In total there are about 5-6 players in the field with each being listed online. A simple amazon search for “Borax Powder” should be sufficient to see the listings.


Other Requests :- Our proposal is to make it a two colour logo. The logo design has to look premium because we would be selling this at a ballpark price of Rs. 350/- per Kg which is fairly expensive for an additive for laundry mostly targeted at 25-40 year olds (millennial types living alone and who will not mind if one load of laundry is about Rs.3 more expensive). The other laundry additives are about Rs. 200 a Kg and the general detergents are all in the range of Rs. 100-150 rupees a Kg.

Inspiration :- We are mostly impressed by the Milliard Borax available online in the USA. The packaging can be seen via a simple google search.


Why Milliard :- It is minimalistic, clean and bold.

Lastly this is an expensive product and the packaging should feel premium so we will be getting your designs printed on a premium packet. Something which will maintain integrity if handled and the packet will be resealable again imagine a Haldiram packet in terms of physical feel.


We hope that this is a good starter message of thoughts and we can work our way to more finesse in future iterations
