Contest Brief

I am a chef setting up a restaurant called AMALÁ in East London (Walthamstow) offering modern Brazilian cuisine in a trendy, vibrant and relaxed environment - a nice neighbourhood restaurant. The food will be served as small portions for sharing (tapas style). Mostly it will present British and international cuisines with a Brazilian twist. Diners will be both surprised and wowed by the flavours.

Even though it is a Brazilian cuisine restaurant, the decor and concept do not scream out Brazil in its most cliche ways (samba, football, carnival). It is a trendy Brazil with tropical chic elements. The interior design will have elements of copper, black, tones of grey and some live greenery as well as Brazilian art (mostly from African and religious origins).

The word AMALÁ was extracted from the literature of Jorge Amado, one of the most prominent modern writers in Brazil. Literally it is a name for a dish offered to the Candomble gods (orixas). It is an African word and its meaning is a dish that brings humankind and the divinities to eat together and celebrate. Around a bowl of AMALÁ there is always laughter, music and camaraderie.

I am thinking of a logo that is clean, in capital letters and stylish without losing the elements I have mentioned above. Perhaps some tropical chic elements? Or perhaps you can find better inspiration in the meaning of the word AMALÁ and the interior design elements? I would like the Á (with the accent) in AMALÁ to be used on menus, letters etc so I am probably looking for two separate products: the stylisation of the word AMALÁ into a logo and the stylisation of the letter Á in the word as a standalone and speaking for itself symbol of the brand. The word/logo AMALÁ will be used in the horizontal signage to be placed at the facade of the restaurant.

I am attaching a mood board which should give you some idea of the interior design.
