Contest Brief

Project Brief:

Create fun 3D characters to liven up the Mindsports Education website - https://www.mindsportseducation.com/. These characters should have personalities that resemble their games. A consideration should be how to animate them. In the design, there should be a sentence or two on how you imagine them moving / interacting with the webpage, and which part of that page. The images need to appeal to children 5-7 years old however there must be an empathy with adults that can be utilised as well.

There should be 4 types of characters:

1. Chess
2. Go
3. Scrabble
4. Mindsports

Personalities

1. Chess

Mindsports would like a whole family of chess characters. Here are their personality traits:

King - A father figure
Queen – A mother figure
Pawns – Children: cheeky, mischievous
Knights – Like a pet: excited, bouncy, playful
Bishops – The uncle of the family
Rooks – Grandparents, old and wise

2. Go

The Go characters should have a personality relating to the game. Think fun, playful, and acrobatic. The game is all about surrounding opponent’s pieces. If a white piece is surrounded by a lot of black pieces that white piece is affectively taken, so would be removed (and vice versa) – consider this in animation thoughts.

3. Scrabble

There should be 3-4 scrabble letter characters which combined would all make an interchangeable word. e.g CARE: This could become RACE, ACRE, CAR, ACE, ARC, REC, ERA, ARE, EAR, AR, ER, RE, AE. So, the letters could animate to create new words.

4. Mindsports

There will also be 1 Mindsports character. It should relate to the Mindsports branding. This character will be happy, helpful and informative (think Clippy the Microsoft Word helper).

Expected Outcome:

At least one of each character with an explanation of their aesthetic and how they would be animated, and the interaction/placement on the home page.

Style: We will want them to walk on our webpages, swing from certain fixed items and look like they are playing and chasing each other. (see word doc)

Employer Feedback

“Michael had the best entry to our 3D character contest. Went above and beyond the other contestants, even providing an example animation of designed characters. Spot on the brief, and we are looking forward to working with him again! ”
