Contest Brief

Hey freelancers!

I am very excited to let everyone know that I have successfully created and finished the first edition to my Trading Card Game: Alzaran TCG. We are set to release the game this summer! For more info: please follow us on instagram. Username: @AlzaranTCG We also have a website: www.Alzaran.com and a YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/c/AlzaranTCG

Anyways, this year's Mecha Edition was just to get our foot in the door. We're now currently preparing for next year's edition and are looking to follow a few more strict guidelines for the illustration.

Given that the Mecha Edition was our first run, we weren't very strict on the illustration. We had several artists working and using their own talents. In the end, we got a lot of great pieces! But, you can tell that the illustration is all over the place and it doesn't match.

With this being said, moving forward we are going to have a very strict guideline on how we want the artwork to look. We're going to call it Alzaran Art.

Attached to this project we placed one image. Alzaran's very popular: Mecha Phoenix!

Please notice the details of the illustration. A few ideas to notice would be:

Line Art. Notice how the outlines (black ink) resemble that of an ink pen. They are not perfect vector lines and the thickness is very inconsistent. The lines are also not too thin and not too bold.

Colors. The colors are very vibrant. NOT PALE! They are very solid bold colors.

Shading/Gradients/Highlights: The lighting is done very smooth with air brush like textures.

As I mentioned above. we are looking for artists who can prove to us that they can very closely match the illustration type mentioned above and shown in the attached image. We have a few artist that we are keeping from this year's edition, including the one who did this piece. They do outstanding work! However, of course we have a large work load so we will need to hire a few more.

WHAT YOU ARE DOING FOR THIS PROJECT:

Next years edition will be the Orga Edition. So now instead of mechanical characters, they will all be organic.

With this being said, for this project you will be creating a Phoenix!

The point of this project is for me to find artists that can prove their ability to follow illustration guidelines and who are talented. I am also looking for enthusiasm in the project. The best artists are the ones who love what they do.

FINAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Design and create your very own Phoenix.

1.) Art Style - Follow the art illustration in the illustrationSample.png (Pay very close attention to the style of art.)

2.) Art Board size - The size must be the same as the template.png file. (Just download that file and use it as a temporary layer. This should automatically setup your artboard size.)

3.) Color Format - All colors must be in CMYK. You MUST change the colors before doing any work. No RGB. (Painting your art in RGB will look good on screen but horrible when I print them. Keeping your colors in native CMYK will allow you to choose your colors better, allowing me to print the cards in the way the you originally intended.)

4.) File Format - Your final entry must be a PSD file with 3 layers. (Your first layer must be the background. The second layer must be the character. The third layer must be all of the effects like fire, flying dirt, slashes, wind gusts, etc...)

Refer to the file entitled sampleCard.png to get an idea as to what your card will look like after I edit it into its frame.

I apologize but I don’t know how to fix it. I would try deleting and reuploading but other people are able to access it so maybe it might be a refresh to the web page on your side? I’m sorry

Remember everyone, your art must be completed in CMYK so that it prints very nicely.

I want to be sure that whether on screen or on print, we always maintain the original colors that the artist (you) intended.

@Everyone. I was able to find 3 more samples showing great examples of the art style/illustration you would need to follow. Please see them, and remember, if you see any differences in art style, above all, always refer to the Mecha Phoenix as your final proof.

I think my favorite part of the art style we are going with, is the colors kind of have a chalky look to them. All of the outlines are very clear and sharp. No colors are outside, or short, of the lines. The contrast between the light and dark is done to perfection. And the lines are very inconsistent as if they were done with an ink pen. Above all, my favorite is that chalky-look to the color though. You may need to do some work to find the appropriate brush to recreate this. If I find out, I will let you know. :)

@Everyone. I know there are millions of very talented artists out there. All of you have your own methods of how you like your finished work to look. And I love all of them. I love to go to the Louvre museum and look at all of the different styles of art. However, please understand that when it comes to a game or a cartoon, all of the characters art style needs to match very closely. Otherwise it will throw off our fans and they will say we are very inconsistent. So please, be very creative and by all means enjoy your work! But, be sure to adhere to the guidelines I have mentioned in the project details.

I will try and find some more examples of art styles that closely match what I am going for. Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention to the art style when we did the Mecha edition. I just let every artist do what they want to get the game finished on time. With this being said, it will be hard for me to upload matching examples of style, this is why I only uploaded one. I will upload some more but please, by all means, if you find a difference in style, always go back and refer to the Mecha Phoenix above all.

Just a heads up to everyone. I will rate pieces based on how I like them. If I rate a piece 5 star, that does not mean give up. You still have a chance that I will like yours more. Also remember, half of the contest is to find artists who can match my illustration guidelines. So someone’s piece may look fantastic, but if it doesn’t match our illustration guidelines, it won’t win.

Ok sir, tomorrow I will present my work to you, do not close the competition earlier, I will repeat the style of the mechanic phoenix (regarding what is specified in the technical task) but also keep in mind that there are ways to make this work even more attractive! I hope you will enjoy it!

@alexandr Great! I will be looking forward to it. I won't close this contest until it expires to give everyone more than enough time. I am always open to seeing an artist give his/her full potential, I actually encourage it. But at the same time, if every artist did what they felt was best for my game, I would end up with 10 different art styles. With this being said, please do your best but please be balanced to match the method of art.

So, sir, as I understand it, do you need a concept for illustrating the phoenix in the style of the card you provided, but not mechanical but organic? If so, then I’m participating - it will be very interesting to work on this task!

I am looking for artists who can prove their abilities to closely match a specific type of illustration... For example Pokémon, and Disney, and looney tunes art all look totally different. If you put them all in the same game it just wouldn’t match.

So the sample of the Mecha Phoenix is a perfect example of the illustration type I am trying to uphold in my game.

In the project details, you will see a few steps of key points that I bring out as an attempt of explaining illustration guidelines....

In this project, I am asking that you create an organic type Phoenix. You can design it in any way you want, it doesn’t necessarily have to be an organic “version” of the one I have.

Also, please download the template to insure proper placement.

The winner will be determined by seeing who can perfectly match my illustration type, (method of visual art) and while doing this, who has the best looking piece.
